What are dip powder nails – and how do they work?
Dip powder nails are a nail enhancement treatment made using a special powder. They’re sometimes called SNS nails.
Here’s how the treatment works:
- You get a manicure! Your nails are cleaned, trimmed, and shaped, and your cuticles are pushed back, preparing your nails for the treatment.
- A bonder may be applied to your nails. This helps the powder adhere properly (though this step isn’t always necessary)
- A gentle base coat is applied to your nails. Our base coat contains vitamins and minerals that promote healthy nails
- The dip powder is applied. We brush your nails with the powder, brush off any excess, and repeat as necessary to create a smooth, sophisticated, richly coloured result
- We apply an activator. This allows the powder to set.
- Your nails are buffed and smoothed out.
- We apply a topcoat. This protects and strengthens your nails.
This might sound a whole lot like acrylic nails…
…but it’s not quite the same.
Those of you who have had acrylic nails before will recognize a lot of these steps. You’re on the right track – the dip powder we use is actually a combination of acrylic, vitamins, and minerals.
The main difference is in how the nails are hardened. With acrylic, a monomer is used to fuse with the acrylic in a process known as polymerization.
Unfortunately, these monomers can be toxic – they have a whole bunch of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and they lead to illness and allergic reactions in some nail technicians and clients. Some of our clients also find that their skin has reacted negatively to acrylic nails. Allergic reactions and damaged nails are two of the reasons we’ve decided not to offer acrylic nails.
Dip powder doesn’t use any toxic monomers. That leaves your nails and skin feeling healthier – and it’s a much more pleasant manicuring experience!

To remove dip powder, we gently file down your nails, then apply acetone for 10-15 minutes. After that, we scrape away the powder, and you’re ready to go! This process is a lot faster than removing acrylic nails – once we’re done, we’ll apply cuticle oil and hand lotion to your hands to rejuvenate your skin.
